ACMV Service, Singapore: NUH Server Room – Standby Aircon Units
Location: NUH, Singapore
Service Required: Chilled Water Fan Coil Unit – Very Low Air Flow (Low Air Flow on Site).
In critical environments like server rooms, proper air distribution is not just a matter of comfort—it’s essential for equipment reliability, thermal stability, and system uptime. Recently, Techtimia Engineering was called in to troubleshoot and resolve a persistent low airflow issue in the supply duct of a client’s server room air conditioning system.
Here’s how we approached and solved the problem—ensuring the room achieved its design airflow rate and cooling performance.

Inadequate Airflow in a High-Demand Environment
Our client reported uneven cooling and rising temperatures within their server room, despite the AC unit operating continuously. A quick on-site assessment confirmed that airflow from the supply diffusers was significantly below design specifications. This posed a risk to server performance and could lead to overheating.
Diagnosis: Identifying the Root Cause
Our HVAC team conducted a comprehensive diagnostic process, including:
- Air velocity measurement at the diffusers and duct branches
- Inspection of internal ductwork for blockages or restrictions
- Filter and evaporator coil checks for clogging
- Fan motor and static pressure testing
Findings:
- Accumulation of debris and dust in the flex ducts and internal lining
- Partially collapsed sections of ductwork due to poor initial installation
- Undersized supply duct branches not aligned with the required CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) for server cooling
- Dirty filters and reduced blower performance contributing to pressure loss
Our Solution: Restoring and Optimizing Airflow
Techtimia Engineering implemented a multi-step remediation plan:
- Ductwork Rectification
- Replaced damaged or collapsed duct segments
- Upsized critical branch ducts to match calculated airflow needs based on ASHRAE guidelines for IT environments
- System Cleaning
- Performed a thorough cleaning of ducts, filters, and internal fan components to eliminate obstructions
- Blower Recalibration
- Adjusted fan speed settings and verified external static pressure readings to match optimal performance levels
- Air Balancing
- Measured and adjusted airflow across all supply diffusers using balancing dampers, ensuring even distribution across the room
- Monitoring Setup
- Installed temperature and airflow sensors for real-time monitoring and future diagnostics
Design Airflow Achieved, System Stabilized
Post-servicing, the server room returned to target temperature ranges within 24 hours, with airflow at each diffuser matching design criteria. Our client saw an immediate improvement in thermal consistency, reduced compressor runtime, and increased energy efficiency.
